Yes, many people are concerned about the wisdom and impact of this project. The existing bridge across Mud Creek at Crail Farm and Middleton roads is safe for the current level of use and suitable to the character of the neighborhood. The bridge proposed by DOT is not only detrimental to public safety, it is a modern eyesore that will harm the areas historic integrity and blight its rural charm.
Middleton Road today is a reasonably quiet, safe place to walk or ride a horse or jog, and many people use and enjoy it. The bridges limited capacity is one reason Middleton hasnt become a shortcut from Little River Road to Kanuga, drawing significant additional traffic, including commercial vehicles and equipment.
Your editorial compared the bridges on Middleton and Brookside Camp Roads. However, conditions at the Middleton Road bridge with its light traffic and heavy pedestrian use are very different from those at the Brookside Camp Road bridge, which is a key structure on a road with heavy vehicular traffic, and where there were several fatalities before the NCDOT acted.
