According to Waverley Council Local Studies Librarian Kimberley O'Sullivan Steward, Waverley Council had intended in the mid 19th century that Charing Cross be the retail centre of the district.
But when trams came in from 1881 the tramline bypassed the centre and Bondi Junction became the hub.
Big chain stores such as Grace Bros opened there while Charing Cross remained the original village of Waverley, with smaller individual shops.
Shopkeepers say that today it manages to retain that atmosphere and a certain Victorian charm, with most of the shops from that era.
It sits on the top of a hill before Bronte Road makes it way down to Bronte Beach.
Carrington Road, parallel with Bronte Road, looks out across Queens Park, which was created along with Centennial Park in 1887.
Before Bondi Junction existed this was the village by the sea, Wright said.
