Three certainly is a charm for Palo Alto junior golfer Alexandra Groetsema. She has competed in the NorCal Tournament three straight years, and has qualified for the CIF State Championships three straight times. Groetsema made it three in a row on Monday after she shot a 4-over-par 76 at Corral de Tierra Country Club in Salinas to finish in a two-way tie for fifth. She finished just three shots behind individual champion Sam Esguerra of Alameda, who had a 1-over-par 73. Groetsema also shot 76 in last year's tournament, when she finished in a five-way tie for third
'Do winds of 40 km/h count as a storm?' I ask my husband, with great hope and fingers crossed. While most people pray for sunshine and balmy weather the night before a weekend getaway, I find myself scanning the latest forecast from Environment Canada, trying to find the faintest glimmer of fury from Mother Nature. My mom and I are heading to Tofino, where bad weather in the winter is heralded as good news.
On the west coast of Vancouver Island, Tofino is perched at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, with the next stop somewhere in Japan. The sleepy town of 1,600 is not a place you wander through en route to somewhere else, accidentally stumbling upon its laid-back charm. As the final stop on Highway 4, you have to plan to get here.
Summer is still peak season for tourism, with resorts and rental homes booked months -- even more than a year -- in advance. But in the off-season, the former maritime trading hub attracts a steady stream of tourists who have already figured out this slice of the wild Pacific is best experienced in winter, now dubbed 'storm-watching' season. The beaches are deserted, you don't need to make dinner reservations a week in advance, and even better, accommodation rates are slashed nearly in half.
