or the first time there are not one, not two, but three young, strong and independent women seeking council seats in Surrey and Delta. It is a credit to the community that along with fielding the usual male candidates, which dominate all political campaigns, that Barinder Rasode and Rina Gill, who are running on opposite slates in Surrey, and Amy Ghuman-Sara, who is seeking the council seat in Delta, where she has been involved in numerous fundraising campaigns as well as working for the city of Delta.Rasode, who studied at SFU and works for the Professional Employees Association, is the senior of the group, not only in age but also having run previously and finishing strong despite not making it into the winners circle. She is running under Mayor Dianne Wattss Surrey First Coalition and with a recent endorsement from long-time right-leaning Conservative candidate Marvin Hunt, she is hoping that second time will be a charm and she will become the first Indo-Canadian woman elected to Surrey council.Gill, who is running for Surrey City council under the Surrey Civic Coalition (SCC), is the young newcomer who is hoping to make history alongside Rasode as the first Indo-Canadian woman to be elected. But she knows that she has her work cut out for her as she is facing a gigantic challenge to make it into council. She is hoping to get the traditional SCC support as well as support from those who support her party running mate Bob Bose, usually the top vote getter along with Hunt on council. Gill said she will become a strong advocate for the South Asian community if she is elected and is hoping that support from the South Asian community will put her over the top. Both Rasode and Gill know that since more than 30 percent of the Surrey population is South Asian it is going to be crucial to get that vote in the right proportion in order for them to win. With Judy Higgenbotham not running this time there is one vacant position that is not occupied by an incumbent and that position really is up for grabs for all the independent candidates running for the November 15 election. So unless something drastic happens on election night that has one or more incumbents losing there might not be enough room for both Gill and Rasode to be both making history in Surrey.Ghuman Sara is the founder of Trinjan, the organization that has organized Kuri Mundey Di Lohri and Mela Mawan Dhiyan Da, and raised funds for the Mata Gujri Ward in Delta Hospital as well as for sending kids to Burns Bog summer day camps
Many music fans get serious about pop through a love affair with a club. Whether it was a legendary spot or just the dive down the street from the dorm, such a place provides more than just loud sound and overpriced beer.
People get attached to the strangest things in clubs -- memorably awful bathrooms, decorously peeling wallpaper, a particular corner where the guitar feedback hits just right. And because these spaces are usually somewhat makeshift, converted from some other identity, like a movie theater, church or old man's bar, their shortcomings become part of their charm.
Club Nokia is the latest venue to open in AEG's entertainment campus L.A. Live; it opened Sunday with a double bill of Beck and Jenny Lewis. It might be the dream club for a new generation, but it doesn't exactly adhere to the old rules. This high-end destination is gleamingly new, with none of the endearing seediness of a historic venue
