''I was supposed to be with him [in Ontario] for that funeral,'' he said. ''I count my blessings. I guess there's a reason for everything. But we used to talk every morning, and now I miss him every day.''
During Magnuson's rookie season in 1969-70, the Hawks finished in first place, and the organization rewarded the players with rings engraved with the words ''pride'' and ''harmony.'' Magnuson loved his ring -- and so did his kids. Kevin remembers his dad using the ring to his advantage. For instance, if he wanted the kids to do something and they were slow to respond, he'd say, ''OK, then I won't show you the ring.'' The threat worked like a charm every single time. Kevin has the ring now. Whenever he sneaks a peak at it, he's reminded of his dad.

1st St. is in store for a makeover, as soon as its new owner returns from school at Stanford University. Owner Eric Dayton said he expects construction to begin in the late summer or early fall of 2009. I m hoping to really do as little as possible because I think it s such a great-looking building as it is, Dayton said. It needs a little bit of fixing up, but the goal is to preserve as much of the historic charm as possible, and I think we ll be able to do that. The building is vacant now, and Dayton would renovate it for a mix of offices, retailers and a restaurant. The city recently recommended the project for a $160,000 grant from the county and Metropolitan Council to clean up the site
